Commitment and Can-Do Nature
White Whale Web demonstrates an uplifting community ethos in addition to design and technical expertise in website development. I worked with Aaron and Randy on a project for the Friends of Idaho Public Television, and I was impressed by their commitment and can-do nature throughout the project. They were great communicators and project managers, and they responded well and promptly to feedback, helping the vision to take shape in a timely fashion. Website development often can be an unwieldy and frustrating process. With Aaron and Randy, it was productive and fun, and it achieved the result we want. I appreciate their work greatly!
The Situation
Friends of Idaho Public Television needed room to tell their story.
Previously, the organization was limited to a single page within the main Idaho Public Television website. That structure restricted how much could be said and how the message could be framed. At the same time, funding conversations created a sense of urgency. If nothing changed, their ability to clearly explain IPTV’s value to Idahoans and decision-makers could be limited when it mattered most.
The goal was to create a dedicated platform that allowed Friends of IPTV to explain why Idaho Public Television is vital to the state and how citizens could get involved.
What We Built
A Distinct Community Support Brand
We designed a dedicated Friends of Idaho Public Television logo that aligned with the parent organization while standing on its own.
Imagery and tone required careful consideration. Visuals were intentionally balanced and neutral. Messaging focused on shared community value rather than divisive topics. This ensured broad appeal while protecting credibility.
A subtle watercolor visual treatment unified the site and reinforced a community-oriented feel without becoming distracting.
Structured Storytelling Around “Vital to Idaho”
The heart of the website is a series of five “Vital to Idaho” pages.
We worked in collaboration with Chad Biggs at Red Sky PR, who developed much of the core messaging. Our team supported content refinement, structure, and on-page SEO to ensure the story was clear, compelling, and discoverable.
Rather than presenting abstract organizational language, the content focused on tangible impact. Education, rural access, emergency communication, and cultural enrichment were framed in practical terms that Idaho residents understand.
Accessibility and Compliance by Design
From the beginning, accessibility was not an afterthought.
The site was built to meet WCAG 2.2 AA standards, with attention to:
- Color contrast
- Semantic structure
- Keyboard navigation
- Accessible forms
This ensured the platform was inclusive, compliant, and prepared for public scrutiny.
Performance and Search Visibility
Public media support sites often experience traffic spikes tied to news cycles or legislative developments. Performance stability was essential.
The site launched with green scores across all PageSpeed Insights categories, including Performance, Accessibility, Best Practices, and SEO.
On-page SEO strategy targeted long-tail search phrases relevant to public broadcasting in Idaho. Without relying on paid campaigns or external backlink strategies, the site began generating organic search visibility.
This gave Friends of IPTV discoverability beyond its existing audience.
Engagement Infrastructure
We integrated newsletter signup functionality to capture and nurture supporters.
Media kits and downloadable resources were structured for easy access, supporting both grassroots advocates and media outreach efforts.
The result was not just an informational site, but a platform for ongoing public engagement.
How We Did It
- Conducted audience research to understand public media positioning within Idaho
- Designed a standalone logo aligned with the parent organization’s brand tone
- Structured information architecture around user intent and key decision-making periods
- Collaborated with Red Sky PR and IPTV leadership to refine messaging
- Implemented reusable WordPress content blocks to streamline publishing
- Built with WCAG 2.2 AA accessibility standards integrated into QA checkpoints
- Optimized media and layout for fast load times and clean PageSpeed results
- Applied structured on-page SEO targeting long-tail public media and Idaho broadcasting search terms
Each decision tied back to clarity, neutrality, and readiness.
Results
The immediate result was control.
Friends of Idaho Public Television now has a dedicated platform where its message can be fully expressed, without the structural constraints of the main IPTV site.
Operationally, the organization gained:
- A scalable content platform
- Accessible infrastructure aligned with WCAG 2.2 AA
- A clear path for supporter engagement
- Organic search visibility without paid amplification
Technically, the site launched with green PageSpeed Insights scores across all major categories, reinforcing credibility and performance stability.
Most importantly, the organization entered 2026 with a unified, professional platform to explain Idaho Public Television’s value.
What This Means for Similar Organizations
- If your message is constrained by a parent platform, a standalone site can create strategic flexibility
- Accessibility and performance are credibility signals, especially in public-sector or advocacy contexts
- Thoughtful, neutral design can broaden support in sensitive or high-visibility public environments
A dedicated platform is not about volume of content. It is about control, clarity, and readiness.
If your organization needs a clear, compliant, and strategically structured platform, we can help.
